***ComNets' substantial contributions span from GSM/GPRS via WiFi and WiMAX to 4G (LTE-A) Systems***

VON: WALKE

Since 1990, when ComNets started its research at RWTH Aachen University, a number of key contributions have been made to cellular and wireless radio systems.Among these are revolutionary contributions like the

  • fundaments of GPRS, namely the Packet Data Channel carried on the GSM TCH and the fast radio link establishment protocol,
  • fundaments of Medium Access of 3rd generation systems like WiMAX and LTE, namely the MAC frame used in all OFDM / OFDMA based modern radio systems,
  • co-ordination across base stations to avoid interference, as applied in 3G and  4G systems,
  • architecture and protocols of Dedicated Short Range Communication systems for electronic fee collection used on motorways, worldwide,
  • fixed decode-and-forward relays for cellular, without which broadband cellular mobile radio networks cannot be deployed, cost-efficiently.

  • Besides that a large number of evolutionary contributions to improve Standards of wireless / mobile systems and to introduce new technologies have beencontributed by ComNets, see here.
