ComNets is partner in the European project MYCAREVENT. This project aims at connecting the car by using nowadays communication systems. The project in particular focuses on the aftersale market. Car maintenance and diagnostics can be significantly simplified by the use of mobile communication. Today the most car failures are caused by car electronics and controlling software. Those devices can be monitored remotely and in case of problems a roadside patrol or a garage will be informed.

The MYCAREVENT consists of 21 partners; among them are the major European car manufactures: BMW, VW, DaimlerChrysler, FIAT. Furthermore two of the biggest European automotive clubs: RAC (England) and RACC (Spain) are part of the MYCAREVENT consortia. Within the framework of this project ComNets is leading the work in respect to the mobile communication. The mobile communication work package focuses not only on evaluating and analysing communication technologies and protocols but also on the development of a demonstration unit (car communication gateway) showing the functions and capabilities of the next generation car communication. The demonstration unit consists of a laptop representing the car communication unit. It uses several communication interfaces like (WLAN, GPRS, UMTS). Additionally the laptop is able to use Bluetooth to connect to the On-Board-Diagnostic box (OBD) of the car. An application running on that laptop analyzes the error codes given by the OBD and connects the car to the service portal of the car manufacture in order to fix the problem.

Task Description:  The goal will be to understand, maintain, refine, document and further develop the existing gateway showing the functions of the next generation car communication. The current version of the gateway enables cars to automatically connect to the service portal using the best suited communication interface available. That includes fast changes of the communication system without interruptions on the transmission.
