Abstract
Within the IST (Information Society Technologies) project BRAIN (Broadband Radio Access for IP based Networks), an air interface based on the HIPERLAN/2 (High Performance Radio LAN type 2) standard is being specified. A series of enhancements to the reference standard on all protocol layers have been identified and are being currently evaluated. This paper deals with some of these enhancing techniques. In particular, at the physical layer turbo coding, adaptive modulation and receiving smart antenna structures are discussed as means to improve the spectrum efficiency. The effect of the first two on the DLC performance is also analysed. Further, link quality control strategies, dynamic channel allocation methods and scheduling algorithms, which utilise IP layer information are presented as enhancements for the DLC layer.
