The ATMmobil project investigates problems and solutions for wireless access to multimedia services based on ATM. The German Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research, and Technology sponsors the project. In contrast to other wireless ATM projects, the ATMmobil project does not work only on one specific wireless ATM system. Four different system scenarios are under investigation, covering the development of local loop, indoor private LAN and public cellular systems. The objectives and architectures of all four system scenarios, namely ATM radio in the local loop, wireless ATM LAN, broadband cellular ATM access, and integrated broadband mobile systems, are described in detail. Technical highlights of the fours system scenarios and the relation of the project to the project to the ongoing standardisation within ETSI and the ATM Forum are outlined
