Abstract
In this paper we examine the dynamic behaviour of adaptive multi rate (AMR) traffic channels in an EDGE system. The goal of AMR is to provide optimum speech quality for any channel condition. A secure decision concerning the optimum codec mode is as important as a quick reaction to channel quality changes. It is shown that these competing demands cannot be matched both with the ETSI proposal in all cases. An extended algorithm for a better decision process is introduced within this paper.
