Curriculum Vitae: Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernhard Walke

Bernhard Walke (*1940) holds diploma (1965) and doctorate (1975) in information engineering, both, from University of Stuttgart, Germany. From 1965 to 1983 he served for 18 years in industry, 15 years as a researcher in the AEG-Telefunken Research Institute Ulm and 3 years as a department head at AEG-Telefunken Systems (now Airbus AG). From 1983 to 1990 he was the Chair of Data Processing Techniques at FernUniversity of Hagen, Germany. 1990 to 2006 he served as the Chair of Communication Networks (ComNets) at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. As a Professor Emeritus until end 2012 he headed the ComNets Research Group at this university.
His team until 2008 counted in between 25 - 45 full-time paid researchers working on

  • new air interface and network protocols,
  • mobile multi-hop relaying and mesh networks,
  • communications software engineering,
  • tools development for stochastic event driven system-level simulation,
  • queuing model and simulation based performance analysis of fixed and wireless systems

The ComNets research over two decades was mainly funded by third-party grants accounting up to 2.5 Mio. € /year. Many research results have proven useful for products and generated great business success. Among them are ETSI GPRS (the enabler of the mobile Internet), CEN-DSRC (electronic debiting on roads), 3GPP LTE air interface MAC frame (also applied for IEEE 802.16m WiMAX), 3GPP LTE relay enhanced cells.
ComNets team members starting from 1999, over more than a decade were leading experts in standardization of IEEE 802 WLAN systems.

Walke has published 275 peer-reviewed conference papers, 60 journal papers, 45 Patents, 7 book chapters and 10 books on architecture, protocols and services, traffic performance, system design, performance evaluation and spectrum requirements calculation of wireless communication systems.

He served

  • As Steering Committee Chair of the European Wireless conference since founding in 1998 until today.
  • In the IEEE Communications Society Awards Committee (2004 – 2006),
  • As guest editor of IEEE Wireless and IEEE Networks, Computer Networks, IEEE Communications and Networking, European Transactions in Telecommunications.
  • 2001 to 2003 as an elected Chair of Working Group 4 (New Air Interface for Beyond 3G systems) of the Wireless World Research Forum.
  • As the TPC Chair of IEEE-PIMRC 2005, Berlin, one of the big flagships of IEEE ComSoc and as TPC chair or TPC member in numerous IEEE conferences.
  • As ITG/VDE board member and as GI section chair.
  • From 1996 to 2007 as scientific coordinator for large BMBF research programmes like Mobile ATM, Multi-Hop and MOBIKOM.
  • As a reviewer for countless many scientific conferences and journals.
  • As the Vice-Dean (1994-96) and Dean (1996-1998) of the RWTH Aachen University, Faculty Electrical and Information Engineering, and as a Speaker (1998-2002) of the Professors in the Faculty.
