Abstract For the simulation of mobile communication networks, like UMTS or HIPERLAN, it is necessary to model the radio channel accurately. The radio wave propagation modelling is the first estimate of the channel quality and hence, it experienced a lot of attraction in recent publications. This paper gives a comprehensive survey of propagation models and proves their applicability for mobile radio network environments. Especially the indoor, outdoor-to-indoor, and dense urban propagation characteristics are interesting in this context since high bit rate multimedia applications are expected to be used in such scenarios.
