Abstract The provision of economical ubiquitous Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) capable to achieve and surpass current 3G performances and throughputs even in remote locations experiencing severe propagation conditions can be achieved through the integration and deployment of relays that promise to enhance the systems capacity and coverage extension. The IST-FIREWORKS1 project has been investigating improvements of WMAN and WLAN networks from enhanced multi-hop relaying deployments and through the exploitation of advanced techniques such as cooperative communication and novel distributed protocols. During the last two years, a conceptual study on issues related to relay-based deployment has been performed from which RRM algorithms have been identified. Design of novel MAC protocols and advanced PHY techniques to support such relay functionalities are been deduced. The aim of the paper is to introduce several of the major objectives and present some achievements of the project that due to paper length limitations represent only a small portion of the obtained results.
