Abstract Packet and Resource Scheduling are two distinct tasks inside the medium access control layer of a wireless system of the fourth generation. Packet scheduling is the etermination of the ordering of packets among competing connections or users, where the server itself is not specified. Resource scheduling (RS) is the determination of the resources of the wireless link to use for which user, while the meaning of the packets is not important. We claim that these tasks should be separated as much as possible so that the problems can be solved in smaller units. In this paper we propose a block diagram for the various tasks of resource scheduling, while the separated packet scheduling is done as known from QoS support in wired networks.
