Abstract This paper introduces a new concept for a flexible way to simulate almost the entire UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). By combining protocol and system simulators, performance evaluations and optimisations can be considered within a global scope. Due to the high complexity of the UMTS physical layer (PHY), a simple and also flexible model for this interface between the simulators had to be found. After introducing these new concepts an outlook on the various new evaluation resources will be presented.
