Abstract The introduction of data services for mobile Internet access via GSM/GPRS in 2001 and the advent of wireless local networks (WLAN) in 2000 was accompanied by the change of the switching technology from circuit-switching to packetswitching mobile radio networks. As a result, interest in traffic theoretical methods for performance evaluation grows in order to adjust appropriately the capacity of the air interface to the expected load caused by mobile users. Important data services are WAP, WWW and packet oriented speech transmission (Voice over IP). This thesis presents the development of analytical models for GPRS, EDGE and HIPERLAN/2 systems that allow the calculation of numerous performance parameters. The validation of the results by simulation results obtained from literature proves the fact, that well parameterised analytical models are as suitable to reproduce real system behaviour as sophisticated stochastic simulation programs. In contrast to most known analytical investigations from literature this thesis emphasises the detailed modeling of real system functions and procedures. Approximation algorithms, such as non-linear optimisation, based on measurements provide exact parameterised analytical traffic source models, which are also able to represent second order statistics and self-similarity effects. These models are validated by comparison to results from literature. Thus, this thesis provides an important contribution for close to reality modeling of packet switching systems. For these systems, it is well known that the exact modeling of the service process compared to the arrival processes is of minor importance. As a result, the mutual dependencies of performance parameters like system load, throughput or waiting time distributions in relation to input parameters such as carrier to interference ratio, correlation factor of packet arrivals, cluster size, link adaptation, mobile speed, frame error rate at the air interface, service strategies for competing traffic flows, etc. can be calculated. Furthermore, the methods permit a transparent description of complex parameter connections and dependencies with respect to packet-switching air interfaces and support decisions in connection admission control and priorisation of real time traffic sources. This thesis develops and discusses solution algorithms based on matrix analytical methods that can rely on parallel implementation of matrix algebra libraries, which permit a fast and efficient calculation of results. Orthogonal mathematical algorithms like stochastic iteration or the linear subspace approach are used. Since most of the performance calculations take place in the Laplace domain, numerical inversion algorithms are applied to transform the results into the time domain.
