Abstract A methodology first introduced in [1] is further developed for performance analysis of 3GPP LTE systems with detailed modeling of PHY, MAC and RLC protocol layers taking relays with wireless backhaul and picocells with wired backhaul into account. CDFs, means and percentiles of spectral efficiency on various protocol layers are calculated for any grid point in a cell and for the whole cell in a multi-cell scenario, respectively. Systems employing either multiple relay cells or multiple pico cells per cell are evaluated w.r.t. cell spectral efficiency and cell edge user spectral efficiency. The paper presents as a main contribution results for LTE systems enhanced by three small cells per cell. According to computational complexity of the analysis, so far results are known for one small cell per cell, only.
