Abstract
This paper presents our design of a self-organising W-ATM multihop network able to support ATM-like QoS. First, we examine the suitability of MAC protocols of ETSI HiperLAN/2 (H/2) and the DCF/PCF (Distributed Coordination Function/Point Coordination Function) of IEEE 802.11 for such a network. Then, we propose a channel-oriented MAC protocol that is based on dynamic packet reservation. Energy signals (E-signals) are used to realise distributed access priorities of wireless stations, to solve the hidden station problem and to achieve a MAC level acknowledgment (ACK) for a fast ARQ. The performance of the self-organising W-ATM multihop network is intensively evaluated stochastically based on a prototypic implementation of the protocols under various traffic loads. Results are presented for networks with different network scenarios and compared to these of IEEE 802.11a and H/2.
