Abstract
This paper describes an approach to simulate the effects of 'dynamic Quality of Service' (dQoS) within ATM networks based on the signalling protocols capability to renegotiate traffic parameters of an active connection. The traffic source, e.g. a 'Video on Demand' (VoD) server, is capable to adjust its bandwidth (resp. cell rate) reservation according to its current load, allowing to utilise statistical multiplexing at the burst level. The 'QoSMIC-Simulator' allows to simulate the various effects of dQoS, especially additional load imposed on signalling links and nodes, and the achievable bandwidth savings compared to static resource allocation.
