Abstract The paper proposes a framework for an optimal resource management for the Satellite UMTS. An efficient resource management deals with the guarantee of the QoS (Quality of Service) condition and the maximization of the system capacity. In the scope of the IST project FUTURE a multimedia service platform is investigated taking these both aspects into account, i.e., guaranteeing the QoS (Quality of Service) condition contracted between the network and the user by means of an appropriate resource allocation, and of maximizing the system capacity by making efficient usage of the available resources. This paper will give discussion for some resource management aspects for the S-UMTS access network and for the UMTS core network which will be likely shared among the terrestrial and satellite radio segments.
