Abstract
A novel distributed random access scheme for wireless ad hoc networks is described. It provides an efficient way for resource requests in ad hoc environments and achieves very low collision probabilities and a mean to provide prioritized access for real-time oriented services. The proposed scheme, that is operated in parallel to the main data transmission, uses a narrowband channel for the random access. The lower data rate takes into account the overhead on the physical layer that has a major impact on the efficiency of protocols for broadband wireless networks.
