Abstract
The demand for broadband communications is rapidly increasing as small to medium sized businesses and private users add Internet access and remote multimedia applications to their daily routines. The geographical distribution of this type of users is such that the deployment of broadband access systems is economically attractive. In manufacturing and industrial automation, broadband radio networks will lead to improved production processes and therefore to decreased production costs. This market has significant potential. In response to growing market pressure for low-cost, high capacity radio links with a guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS), ETSI and ATM Forum have initiated the standardization for Wireless ATM (WATM). Within ETSI first the RES 10 group took care of the process then a new project has been established for Broadband Radio Access Networks (BRAN). Within the ATM Forum the Wireless ATM Group (WAG) works on specifications for WATM. ETSI and ATM Forum work co-operative in the field of standardisation. ETSI produces specifications for the Physical and Data Link Control (DLC) Layer, whereas the ATM Forum specifies networks functions.
