Abstract This paper presents a joint research project which covers several topics across all layers of ATM communication technology from application level to hardware components. There are eight institutes/chairs of the University of Technology in Aachen participating in this project, divided into a software and a hardware group. This paper focuses on the work of the software group, which addresses the following issues, which are needed to employ ATM/B-ISDN to its full extent in actual applications: 'standardized' interfaces supporting the usage of ATM in B-ISDN, and high-speed protocols for multimedia applications with extreme requirements adapted to ATM functionalities. As these topics are extremely performance sensitive the project is accompanied by both analytical as well as simulative performance studies for end-to--end performance of ATM connections.
