Abstract This paper summarizes results of investigations of medium access control protocols for inter-vehicle communication systems performed in various European research projects. The results presented were achieved in the DRIVE II project COMIS. This paper gives an concise overview on the protocols and their characteristic performances. It focuses on this decentral organised protocols that are designed to reduce the negative influence of highly dynamic network topology changes on the communication network performance. The results underline the need for strong co-operation between neighboured communicating stations to improve the medium access and to meet the requirements on IVC systems.
