TETRIS - A simulation tool for TETRA systems

Abstract
This paper presents the simulation tool TETRIS, which provides a complete simulation environment for both protocol stacks, Voice plus Data and Packet Data Optimised, of the TransEuropean Trunked RAdio (TETRA) system.

A characteristic feature of both TETRA protocol stacks, Voice + Data and PDO, is the fact, that the definition of the parameters used for adapting a protocol stack to a given TETRA network, e.g. the collision detection parameters of the random access protocol, is out of the scope of the TETRA standard and is left up to the network provider. Furthermore, no algorithms are defined, how a base station is to reserve uplink and downlink transmission capacity, especially in case of a dynamically changing traffic load.

The TransEuropean Trunked RadIo Simulator (TETRIS) has been created in order to serve as a basis for a future base station planning tool in regard to the parameters and algorithms left open. This tool is meant to assist a network provider in operating and maintaining a TETRA network by proposing optimum reservation allocation and collision detection strategies.
