Abstract
In this paper, an analyticsl approach of predicting Internet performance in GSM/GPRS radio access networks is presented. The analytical approach is based on Fluid-flow Modelling (FFM) and uses an ON/OFF source model with negative exponentially distributed sojourn times. After introducing the theory, the FFM approach is applied to predict the mean IP delay for downlink IP traffic in a GSM cell serving multiple users of the GPRS. Therefore, by stochastic simulation ON/OFF source parameters representing the mean offered traffic in typical GPRS load scenarios are derived. Using an identical load scenario for both simulation and analysis, the results are compared with results of the GPRS emulation tool GPRSim, which succesfully has been applied to simulation-based GPRS network dimensioning in the past.
