Abstract
In the information age the importance of mobile communication is increasing. Especially with the success of the internet mobile data applications become attractive for the users. Furthermore, there is an evolution towards multimedia applications, i.e. simultaneous voice, data and/or video transmission. Since it is not possible to install an appropriate infrastructure everywhere or without considerable installation costs, there is an increasing demand for wireless ad hoc networks that provide spotaneous communication between mobile stations. Because multimedia applications need higher data rates and quality of service (QoS), new circumstances arise that have to be considered for the design of appropriate protocols and tansmission schemes for the air-interface of the ad hoc system. In this thesis the main components and aspects for the development of an air-interface are investigated and appropriate protocols are suggested. Besides the propogation conditions at 5 GHz, which are characterized by means of raytracing techniques and have direct impact on the transmission scheme, analytical models are derived for the proposed transmission scheme OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) in combination with dierential modulation schemes. Both, propagation conditions and transmission schemes, will be taken into account for the development of the protocols. Thereby, special attention is paid to the characteristics of ad hoc systems with QoS suppport. The procedure and results described within this thesis are useful for the development of new air-interfaces. Especially the method of the complete consideration of all relevant components that have an impact on the performance of the remaining components leads to an optimal solution. This method should be applied early in the developmental phase of a new air-interface. For the performance evaluation of the proposed protocols, which have been specied in SDL (Specication and Description Language), an event-driven simulator has been developed. On the one hand it is characterized by its modularity and on the other hand by its realistic consideration of the propogation conditions and their impact on transmission errors. By means of the simulator suitable values have been derived for the protocol parameters and it has been shown that the proposed protocols are appropriate to support multimedia applications in ad hoc networks.
