Abstract This paper analyses performance of AODV (Ad hoc On Demand Distance Vector) routing protocol in IEEE 802.11a multi-hop ad hoc networks. IEEE 802.11a operates in the 5GHz band and offers 8 different coding schemes. Each coding scheme has a specific behavior according to the error probability and supported data rate. The impact of the coding schemes (PhyModes) of IEEE 802.11a on the performance of AODV is evaluated using computer simulation. The traffic performance and network connectivity using different PhyModes are evaluated. Optimized PhyModes resulting in best traffic performance and high network connectivity can be derived from the simulation results
