Abstract
In the past, telecommunication networks, such as telephony and Cable-TV networks, were developed and optimized for specific services by coupling service and network support. The integration of new services into these networks is difficult to achieve, as major modifications of the network design are usually required. The service concept of the packet-switched Internet avoids this drawback of this approach by providing a generic bearer service, which might be used by any application. The Internet principles currently have a strong influence on the development of mobile networks, which offer a wireless access to the Internet through bearer services
supporting IP-based applications. Still, mobile networks support telephony services by specialized bearer services to meet the high transmission delay requirements of these applications. The support of telephony thus still takes a special role and violates the
service integration principle of the Internet. In this thesis the packet switched bearer services of the GSM based mobile networks
GPRS, EGPRS and GERAN are analyzed and modified to support telephony services by packet switched radio bearers, avoiding the special treatment of telephony. The modifications of the radio bearers are done in conformance to the relevant standards,
which represent a framework and limit the possible alterations. The performance of the modified bearer services is assessed through simulations, which take the key characteristics of the analyzed mobile networks into account. Additionally,
an analytical model is developed, which allows to estimate the transmission delay of voice data on the packet switched bearer services. In this thesis it is proven that IP based voice applications can be supported by the packet
switched radio bearers of the GSM-based mobile networks. The developed extensions and modifications of the bearer services lead to significant improvements of the transmission delay of the existing packet switched radio bearers. The improvements can
be achieved without restricting the flexibility of the packet switched radio bearers.
