Abstract
The ever growing demand for mobility and higher data rates became the reason for the evolution of systems like GSM leading to EDGE and EGPRS and the development of even more advanced systems. One of these new sophisticated systems is HIPERLAN/2 which has been standardized by ETSI BRAN in April 2000. While UMTS is currently being deployed nationwide and will be able to provide datarates up to 2 Mbit/s HIPERLAN/2 will be able to offer significantly higher gross datarates up to 54 Mbit/s in hot spots like airports, conference and exhibition halls. Still, the net datarate depends on the produced overhead, the actual implementation of the protocols and the present interference. Most important within these topics are the interference situation and the algorithms for the Link Adaption. Therefore, this focuses on the Link Adaption in HIPERLAN/2 while trying to use a realistic model of the interference and detailed implementations of the used protocols for Random Access, Scheduling, Link Adaption, and Selective Repeat ARQ. Several Link Adaption algorithms with different kinds of implementation complexity and support of real time and non real time data are investigated by computer simulations. The importance of TCP/IP resp. UDP/IP is taken into account by using detailed implementation of these protocols in the simulator, too.
