Abstract This paper presents a framework for building re-configurable protocol stacks. A high degree of reconfigurability is achieved through composing complex behavior of a communication system using Functional Units, forming Functional Unit Networks. The feasibility of Functional Unit Networks and its application to next generation radio networks will be discussed. The applicability of Functional Unit Networks to wireless communication systems is exemplarily shown in the context of a current research project regarding next generation radio networks (WINNER).
